Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride & Farmers Revenge (Petersburg, KY)
“Kentucky’s Classic Hayride”
By Noah Wullkotte: Jollypumpkin@aol.com
The dark and winding road leads to a haunted farm in Petersburg, Kentucky. Ghosts, ghouls and horror movie icons are lurking in the shadows and you never know when they’ll come out of hiding. This is City Blood’s review of Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride and Farmers Revenge.
Sam from the movie Trick ‘r Treat stalks the crowd as they wait to board the hayride. Mortimer Sneed welcomes you to Sandyland Acres. Don’t step over the dead line or else. Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride isn’t your run of the mill hayride. Many of its scenes are based off of popular horror movies and there are some creative scares along the way.
You’ll meet famous killers such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and even Santa Claus has gone a little mad. Haunted hayrides are unique since the tractor driver is in control of your destiny and you’re up close and personal with other people on the wagon. It’s fun seeing how others react to different scenes. There’s always someone that freaks out or they’re frozen in fear.
Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride has some eye catching scenes. The flaming truck with killer hillbillies was pretty intense and the headless horseman holding a light up jack o’ lantern was very memorable. This is a haunt that doesn’t follow a specific theme, but that’s okay. You’ll drive past a pirate ship with a loud cannon and the clown driving an ice cream truck was a pleasant surprise. The sound clip from the movie “It” was a nice touch. You’ll experience usual scenes such as the haunted cornfield. This cornfield has large pumpkin scarecrows and you never know what’s hiding in the corn.
Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride uses some startling effects. Fog shoots up in the air, fake snow covers customers and the graveyard has an old bell that an actor operates. We appreciated that many of the actors were quite large. Jason Voorhees was the most intimidating character of the night. He hit the wagon with his machete which was inches away from my arm. This definitely got my attention. You’ll experience movies like Saw. Don’t breathe in the poisonous smoke or else.
There are some areas that need improvement. The Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees scenes could be more detailed. The Killer Santa room was definitely fun, but could be more intense. But overall this is one of our favorite haunted hayrides. It’s one of the few we’ve been to that incorporates horror movie scenes which makes its quite different. Total tour time is 22 minutes.
After we survived the haunted hayride, we got in line for Farmers Revenge. The building is decorated with skeletons and there’s a male skeleton with his skeleton dog. Farmers Revenge is an old school haunted house with some spooky rooms. The dark maze isn’t too difficult, but I have to say that it was somewhat scary as I tried to find my way out. Rooms include Frankenstein’s Laboratory, clown house, dungeon, a dinning room and much more. The Hellevator is homemade and features an actress that makes the floor move back and fourth with her feet. Farmers Revenge has a variety of props such as a vortex tunnel, claustrophobia tunnel, an animated clown and much much more.
The Hellevator could be improved. Frakenstein’s Laboratory could also be more elaborate. We did the like that the claustrophobia tunnel was illuminated red. It was as if you were entering the pits of Hell. Total tour time was around 7 minutes which includes a brief video at the beginning. Tickets are $12 for Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride and $10 for Farmers Revenge. A combo ticket is $20. Hayride VIP tickets are $20. There is now a separate line for VIP which makes it much easier to locate.
There are plenty of concessions available at the Spooky Gift Shop and Aunt Susie’s Haunted Kitchen. Funnel Cakes are the most popular food item and the Spooky Gift Shop has some great gifts. I bought a Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride blanket for only $10. There’s also a glow toy stand which sells necklaces, flashing toys and more. Don’t worry about parking because Sandyland Acres has plenty of it and it’s very safe and organized.
I always walk away with a smile on my face after I’ve toured the haunts at Sandyland Acres. The farm embodies the Halloween spirit and it’s an all around fun place. You owe it to yourself to visit Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride & Farmers Revenge. You’ll have a creepy good time.
