Necropolis Underground (Indianapolis, IN)
“Hands on Horror “
By Noah Wullkotte: Visited on 10/17/26
We slowly walked up to Necropolis Underground, Indiana’s over 50,000 square foot house of horrors. It takes place inside the former Western Electric telephone equipment manufacturing plant. This plant manufactured telephones for the entire country. Necropolis Underground celebrates their 37th season. A crazed psycho with a flame thrower blew fire high into the sky and lit the ground a blaze. A woman with rings of fire performed as people waited to enter the building. It was packed the night of our visit and we were ready for some fright. Necropolis Underground features 4 great haunted attractions. These are Nightmare House, Cemetery of the Dead, Dead and Breakfast and The Bunker.
The Bunker is a touch haunt. You’re given the option of wearing a yellow chicken vest if you’re not wanting to get physical. You’ll be grabbed, verbally assaulted and possibly separated from your group. You’ll notice some actors from Nightmare on Edgewood if you’re familiar with this classic attraction that is no longer operating. This is an action packed haunt where there’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Touch haunts are interesting because it’s no holds barred. You really never know what to expect because of this. It’s like an impromptu attraction where it’s different for everyone. It’s an actor’s playground in a sense and characters get to really have fun and get away with things they normally wouldn’t. It’s unrehearsed terror in a sense.
We were placed with a group of 4 and seeing their reactions was almost as fun as our own experience. A young man was put on a table as he was examined and threatened. Would his eyeball be removed or would his tooth be extracted? The only way we were aloud to escape is if we held him down. The Bunker is a wild and crazy haunt where I was grabbed multiple times. The element of touch amplifies the experience and makes it more horrifying. You’re not even safe around the props. My head was grabbed and pulled towards an animatronic. I was inches away from it hitting me. I wouldn’t get hurt, but it was still intense none the less. Nothing is off the table inside The Bunker. I was told to put my hands on my head before being shot by a large gun. I was given three seconds before my impending doom. You will need to crawl on your hands and knees at a certain point. You might notice a photographer taking pictures inside of the The Bunker. You can purchase your photo after you exit.
Necropolis Underground has many colorful characters you can interact with. One had had me opening my mouth to show him my teeth. He was a twisted killer of sorts and was covered with teeth from his unfortunate victims. You can explore the Dead City Festival midway and choose what order you want to enter the haunts. You’re free to pick your fear. This haunt has lots of spooky entertainment which includes axe throwing, mini Golf, various Escape Rooms and VR Escape (Virtual Reality). There’s a plethora of vendors, concessions and more.

(A monster waits for you at Necropolis Underground.)
As we mentioned before, Necropolis Underground is made up of 4 attractions which are Nightmare House, Cemetery of the Dead, Dead and Breakfast and The Bunker. Your room number is 13 at Dead and Breakfast. You’ll enter that room multiple times throughout your haunted journey. Cemetery of the Dead is pretty unique since the majority of it is themed after a haunted cemetery. They do a pretty good job sticking to a haunting theme. Nightmare House is very spooky and has its intense moments.
Necropolis Underground is full of high tech special effects. This includes a large killer rat, a yeti, a large animatronic monster, massive spiders and much much more. There were a few animatronics that weren’t working properly when we entered the torture room. The electric chair wasn’t activated when we walked past it. One of my favorite props was the CGI chainsaw attack. It was unusual and just plain cool. The animated car would give Stephen King’s Christine a run for her money.
Necropolis Underground is pretty detailed. The church had me wanting to make a confession. The cemetery uses actual dirt to make you feel like you’re 6 feet under and entering an actual cemetery. Other rooms you’ll experience include a garden, dungeon, playroom, sewer and more. The tilting room was unexpected and the bedroom had a live possession.
A few scenes could have used more actors. Better signage would help those who weren’t sure where to enter the building. The signage for the various attractions inside of Necropolis Underground could be improved as well. Overall we have few complaints when it comes to this haunt. Total tour time was around 40 minutes, but could be longer depending on your interaction with the monsters, crazed creatures and madmen.
General admission online is $34.99 – $39.99 plus fees. Add $15 for for a Fast Pass to skip the regular lines. Add $35 for Front of the Line. It’s only $29.99 for groups of 15 or more. General Admission prices at the box office on the day of the event are $5 more. 15 minutes of Axe Throwing, 13 holes of mini golf, Escape Rooms and the VR Experience are $10 per person per game or Escape Room. Parking is free. No Scares Lights On event takes place on Sunday, October 25th from 2-4pm. It’s family friendly and only $5.
Necropolis Underground is a high quality haunt with excellent set design and some memorable characters. The Bunker was the highlight for us since it featured the best acting of the night. It’s also the most interactive of the 4 attractions. Most people will really enjoy Necropolis Underground since there’s a lot of variety in terms of scares.
