The Dent Schoolhouse (Cincinnati, OH)
“30 Seasons of Screams”
By Noah Wullkotte: Visited on 9/19/26
The Dent Schoolhouse will strike at your deepest darkest fears. Scares come from every corner. They do a fantastic job hiding the various monsters, creatures, clowns, students and more. A banshee flies across the ceiling, a large vampire bat swoops down on its latest victim and a psychopath literally climbs the walls. Will you survive the madness? This is unlike any school you’ve ever attended. The schoolhouse was built in 1894 and shutdown in 1950. Evil lives behind these walls and school is in session. If you’re tardy then expect death. There’s old antiques, dust, grime, pain peeling, busted wood and more. It looks and feels haunted. This year the audio is more immersive. It’s louder, frightening and the terror will stay with you long after you exited the haunt.
Ghosts roam the halls of The Dent Schoolhouse. You might even see Dent’s newest character Mr. Shady. He can be seen near a poor soul who hanged herself because she couldn’t take it anymore or was it murder? Mr. Shady is a dream dealer and are you ready to make a deal? The Dent Schoolhouse has made a lot of changes for its 30th season and has incorporated quite a few projection mapping/CGI effects.
The basement is better than ever with new scares, crazy creatures of the night and more. Red lights illuminate the steps that lead to the belly of the beast. Corpses hang from the ceiling and it’s your mission to get out of the way. You’re one of the school’s troublemakers and it’s your head on a silver platter. Charlie the Janitor is very angry and lashes out at his latest victim. She screams out in pain as she’s struck with a large metal wrench.
There’s some delicious eye candy you’ll encounter along the way and some unique props that you won’t see just anywhere. A male school student having his butt paddled by a teacher was both hysterical and disturbing. The student banging his head against the desk was sick and twisted. You never know what to expect at The Dent Schoolhouse. Hanging severed heads have been carved like jack-o-lanterns and are lit with glowing orange lights. The laboratory features a large behemoth that resembles Frankenstein’s Monster. The Dent Schoolhouse has just about everything you could want in terms of props. They even have a classic electric chair. The Dent Schoolhouse uses water, fog and intense lighting. It’s like stepping foot onto a Hollywood movie set.
There are some grotesque moments at The Dent Schoolhouse. My personal favorite is the body dump. It’ resembles a low lying claustrophobia tunnel surrounded by body parts and bloody bits. A woman screams, “run while you can”. A man sits on a table filled covered with blood. He seems to be missing something. Parts of his legs have been torn off. An animatronic missing half it’s body yells in pain as hooks stretch the skin on his face. It reminded me a little of the classic horror film Hellraiser. Spiders, snakes, roaches and werewolves have invaded The Dent Schoolhouse. The greenhouse is full of blood thirsty beasts and is a big improvement compared to previous seasons.

The Dent Schoolhouse has one of the most unique mazes around. Enter a maze full of bubbles. You’ll definitely get wet. You can either experience this area of bypass it. You’ll enter the Monster Midway after you exit the haunt. It gets better and better every year. This season, there are additional photo-op stations. My favorite is the new Cincinnati Slashes where you can get your picture taken with some of your favorite horror villains like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Ghost Face.
The highlight for me is of course the Cincinnati Haunted House Museum. This unique side attraction lets you explore the Cincinnati area’s haunt history. I can spend hours looking at the old fliers, tickets, pictures and memorabilia. Dent has a variety of 5 minute escape rooms such as The Lab, Charlie’s Basement, Locker Escape and more. Thrash around as you sit down in the electric chair ride. Become a crispy critter as you’re fried to death. There’s also a Jack-o-Lantern Showcase, Axe Throwing, a skeleton DJ, an AI talking brain, the Spooky Shop and more. If you’re in the mood for something tasty to eat then don’t worry.
The Dent Schoolhouse has a Fall Favorites Menu inside the Monster Midway where you can get brownies, buckeyes, fudge, specialty donuts, mini donuts and some Halloween drinks like Apple Cider and Pumpkin Spice Frappe. The concession stand near the ticket booth has nachos, caramel apple slices popcorn, pretzels, pumpkin cookies, Ghoul-Aid, soda and much much more.
The Dent Schoolhouse has two lines. You’ll first enter the traditional queue line where you’ll meet some colorful characters like Pumpkin Smasher. Make sure to bring him a pumpkin for him to smash with his large mallet. You’ll also come across Charlie the Janitor and Mr. Shady. He’s Dent’s newest character which we mentioned earlier in the review. After a witch with rotten teeth took our ticket, it was our turn to enter the Fall Festival and get our picture taken.
The Fall Festival has various booths such as Dracula’s Revenge, Costume Contest, Witch’s Brew, Bone Throw and more. New this year is a large animated werewolf and there are plenty of other petrifying props. There are many jack-o-lanterns that decorate the Fall Festival. This is also where you get your picture taken. Watch out for the mischievous Devil who can be seen terrorizing people. Dent has many ticket options and special events such as Behind the Scenes Tour, Ghost Tours, Lights On, Slasher Night, Lights Out and A Christmas Nightmare. Ticket prices vary and you can get information on them by visiting www.dentschoolhouse.com. Free Parking is available at at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Cincinnati Christ Hospital down the street. Different businesses offer paid parking starting at $10, but you’re obviously better off walking a little to save some money.
The Dent Schoolhouse is a 20 minute tour of terror that will send chills down your spine and will have you questioning your sanity. Put them near the top of your haunt list this Halloween season and tell them City Blood sent you.
