Literally, A Haunted House at Culbertson Mansion (New Albany, IN)
“Become A Sweet Sacrifice”
By Noah Wullkotte: Jollypumpkin@aol.com
Every year Culbertson Mansion overhauls the entire haunt and introduces a new theme. This year it’s the Coven of Anguish. While in line a ghoul holds a book that suddenly catches on fire. Look straight ahead and you’ll see a chalk board that features the number of personal dampenings, quitters, barfers, crap-tastrophies, cryers and pass-outs. The number of criers was being updated the night we were there.
Enter a spooky graveyard with a large cauldron. Worshipers of Anguish would love for you to become their next sacrifice. This is a very theatrical haunt with acting being at the forefront. The cast is young, but they’re phenomenal in the way they interact with their victims, uh I mean customers. Anguish is a horned creature with razor sharp teeth and no eyes. He wants you to be one of his children. The silicone mask was custom made by Composite Effects. Will you worship Anguish?
Descend up the fire escape and let the fun begin. Enter the carriage house and hopefully Anguish doesn’t get you. Culbertson Mansion uses some old school effects. The sacrifice room features a girl being cut by a knife as candles float above her. Other scenes include the brand new swamp, a Jack-O’-Lantern room and more.
Will you become one of the missing children that have posters that decorate the wall? Speaking of walls, I had one hit me from the side. I don’t want to give away every scene and I’m not going to. But Culbertson Mansion is known for its coffin ride. Lay down on your back and let the lid close as a crazed actor slides a coffin into the wall. Another thing Culbertson Mansion is known for is its spinning box. Step inside a box and hold onto the bar as it spins around and around.
Some haunts offer a new scene or two, but Culbertson Mansion offers you a brand new haunt every season and this what we love about them. We always expect the unexpected. Total tour time is 13 minutes. Tickets are just $15 which is pretty reasonable. All profits made go towards the restoration of the Culbertson Mansion. There are various concessions available. Krampus Haunt is Culbertson’s Christmas haunt and it takes place on December 16th and 17th.
Could scenes have more detail? Could the haunt be longer? Yes, to both, but overall Literally, a Haunted House at Culbertson Mansion is a great attraction that will appeal to the old and young at heart.
