Baxter Avenue Morgue (Louisville, KY)
“The Maker of Monsters”
By Noah Wullkotte: Visited on 10/3/26
The weather was perfect and it was close to midnight. We walked underneath the Baxter Avenue Morgue gate. Light bulbs slowly flash as the classic song Jeepers Creepers played in the background. The Baxter Avenue Morgue ticket sign turns off and on as an animated skeleton waves. Every time someone walked near the entrance, security would open the roped off area. It felt like the haunt was a secret club full of fright. Various crazed mental patients tormented the crowd. You will see them later in the haunt as well. The Maker of Monsters welcomes you to the Baxter Avenue Morgue.
This Louisville staple has been around for 26 seasons. Just imagine the spirits that have walked through its haunted halls and the patrons who’ve screamed their heads off. There are 7 doors marked with a yellow chicken for those who can’t handle the terror. Please don’t be one of those people. Baxter Avenue Morgue is one of those haunts that thrives on suspense. It’s quite suspenseful because of the way it’s designed.
There are tight hallways, low ceilings, dark rooms and some unusual scares. The actors use light touch, but in our case it was more extreme. A killer clown wanted to remove our legs with his gas powered chainsaw. He was relentless as he chased us and wouldn’t stop until we were ready to leave. He placed his gas powered murder weapon against our skin and wanted to taste our blood. It was funny and unsettling at the same time. Most of the other characters are inches away from your face and will brush up against you.
Baxter Avenue Morgue feels haunted and it looks haunted as well. I felt like I was being watched. You’ll explore scenes such as a large graveyard with actors and decor on both sides. It’s quite immersive. The grim reaper that slowly rose from his grave was great. The bloody hospital will have you questioning modern medicine. The Spider cave doesn’t look much like a real cave, but the sound effects make it feel authentic. I could have sworn that I felt a drop of water, but it could have just been my imagination.
This haunt has your typical scenes, but some of them are more unique. The body bag chamber features one body bag that’s open. An actor proceeded to try to shove us into the black body bag. It was very creepy. The morgue drawers looked old and weathered and of course an actor wanted us to get into one. The audio is good at Baxter Avenue Morgue. Mambo Italiano plays in one scene and an actor could be heard speaking in Italian. Other scary scenes include a bloody dining room, a country cabin, an old room with crates, boiler room and much much more.
Some of the actors are pretty decent, but quite a few showed up more than once and didn’t do much besides stare. The little girl who talked about her dog inside of the graveyard was quite effective. You’ll meet this dog later on. Rabies is the least of your worries. Actors come from everywhere even inside of the walls and hidden behind portraits. The first scene where the rules are recited could be improved since it sets the tone for the haunt. It wasn’t as effective compared to previous years. There are plenty of old props being used and some that are just surreal. The alien skeleton specimen was out of this world.
Total tour time was 15 minutes, but could be longer depending on your pace. We walked pretty slowly to take everything in. We suggest that you do the same. General Admission is $25 and a Speedpass is $50. Group discounts are available for 30 or more people. Parking is free across the street and nearby streets. Visit www.baxtermorgue.com for information on parking. A $5 off discount coupon is available on Sundays only and must be printed out. Baxter Avenue Morgue is one of those special haunts that plays heavily on its spooky ambiance. A sense of dread came over us once we entered the basement of the morgue. It’s a haunt that’s unlike anything else in the area.
