American Horrorplex (Louisville, KY)
“I’ve Been Slimed!”
By Noah Wullkotte: Visited on 10/3/26
The Bracken-Hart Institute Paranormal Society (B.H.I.P.S.) investigates a haunted institute. This place has been inhabited by many entities. Before you ever step foot inside, you’ll see some crazy characters. A mental patient with a plunger attached to his stomach had a stare down with me. Creatures of the night slide on the ground as sparks fly.
Put your hands on your head and smile real big. Get ready for a sweet sweet chainsaw attack. It’s unusual to have a chainsaw so early in a haunt, but it works because it’s unexpected. The Bracken Hart Institute for the Criminally Insane has its very own service elevator with one freakish dude who wants to kill you. Hold on for dear life or you might just fall on your ass.
American Horrorplex is a wild and crazy ride. I’ve never seen mental patients so unhinged. This is a very hectic haunt. There’s loud music, sound effects, screaming and yelling from various characters and pure mayhem. We were behind a group of young girls and they were losing it. Every little thing made them jump about a mile. It was very entertaining. American Horrorplex resembles a real broken down hospital.
There are plenty of props you’re unlikely to see at other haunts. They make sense in the scenes they decorate and it’s not just random chaos. A gorilla has its brain exposed as it thrashes around. A chimpanzee can be heard screaming as it’s experimented on. There are plenty of twisted and gross experiments taking place at the Bracken Hart Institute for the Criminally Insane. Other props include a man being shocked in the high voltage zone, a ghoul that pops up from a barrel, another ghoul that rises from a laundry sink, a monster showing its razor sharp teeth and much more. There’s even a little bit of projection mapping in the sewer.
American Horrorplex is a very unusual haunt, but it has to be. Remember that you’re entering a mental institute and it’s no holds bar in terms of intensity. A nurse with an injured eye is attacked by her patient. You might need a cold shower after you’ve walked through American Horrorplex. Their shower is full of hair and one woman who needs yours. She looks like she’s been scalped as she holds her head. The shower glows a lovely red. There are plenty of hair raising scenes at American Horrorplex. This includes a reception area, a padded room, X- Ray Examining room, Gary’s Auto Repairs, a spider infestation and more. My favorite scene is what I would call the Belly of the Beast. You’ll enter a bizarre monster with weird pulsating sacks or are those eggs?
You could say that American Horrorplex is a disgusting haunt and two scenes instantly come to mind. Have you ever wondered what it smells like when a person eats feces out of a bedpan. Well, now you do. To say that this was disgusting is the understatement of the year. The putrid smell almost made me gag. The other scene will have you taking a seat on a train. You’ll meet one crazy monster and possibly be slimed by a test subject that breaks out of a crate. I was covered in white goop. I want to say it was ectoplasm, but I’m not sure at this moment.
American Horrorplex is very theatrical with some great special effects. Some of which have already been mentioned. One of the first scenes features CO2 Fog that’s illuminated with red lighting. It’s a great effect. This haunt has become a fan favorite over the years and there’s one main reason for that. It’s a bat shit crazy haunt where you never know what to expect. This is a good thing because it makes it very entertaining and suspenseful. Total tour time was 20 minutes excluding the brief video you watch beforehand.
Enter the Gift Shop after you survived American Horrorplex. This is where you can purchase a T-Shirt, tumbler, beer mug, hat, flag, key chain, lantern and just about anything you can think of. Hell, they even have their own soiled underwear. Don’t forget to press the button to activate the Bucky the Beaver Animatronic or play the beat ’em up arcade game Splatterhouse. The gift shop leads to the midway full of food, vendors and fun. There’s even a petting zoo with sheep where you can rent them to eat your lawn.
Concessions include hot dogs, sausage, walking tacos, cheeseburgers, nachos, hot drinks, soda and more. The prices are very reasonable. Boo Bucks can be used for concessions. There are carnival games, an escape room and a brand new add on attraction called Scareview Manor’s Carnival of Chaos. Tickets are $5 and it’s a fun while it lasts. Meet Orville Marker the Carnival Barker. Audition to become part of the carnival. Do you have any special talents? This 4 minute haunt is very actor driven. Scareview Manor Merchandise is available to purchase.
