American Horrorplex (Louisville, KY)
“Sloppy Sloppy Joes!”
By Noah Wullkotte: jollypumpkin@aol.com
The weather was perfect for our visit to the one and only American Horrorplex. This Louisville haunt has gain notoriety over the year’s as one of Kentucky’s best and we couldn’t agree more. The characters are wild to say the least. We were confronted by a little girl holding a teddy bear. She asked us if we wanted to hold him. She screamed as she pulled back as we tried to touch the cute stuffed bear. Another character had a stomach with razor sharp teeth ready to consume us. We luckily escaped in one piece, but then another actor approached us. He was holding a syringe as he shot air into my face. The Bracken-Hart Museum was quite unique and a great way to pass time as you wait in line. Music was playing and there was horror movie trivia on the movie screen.
After we got our picture taken, we waited a few minutes in line before it was our turn to enter. The Bracken-Hart Institute For the Criminally Insane is home to the most sadistic and psychotic freaks you’re ever going to see. One was holding a bedpan full of poop. She proceeded to take a bite as her fingers were covered in fecal matter. The stench made me almost gag. A nurse helps a patient give birth to a Flesh Lumpkin as she licks the baby. One bat shit crazy patient wanted to suck my toes and she kept popping up when I least expected it.
The actors at American Horrorplex are very interactive and do a great job separating groups if you end up running into another. The nurse stopped us briefly and had us take a cognitive test. I proceeded to follow her directions as I touched my head, knees and toes. We only saw one chainsaw maniac. Too many chainsaws can become somewhat annoying and ineffective. But American Horrorplex has just the right amount and uses it effectively.
This is a very bizarre haunt. The scenes are wild and crazy. Enter the belly of the beast where you never know what to expect. An elevator takes you to the Bracken-Hart Institute as the cord snaps and all hell breaks loose. There’s been a rat invasion as one poor soul fights off the vermin. Spiders run rampant at American Horroplex and you better watch your step. The shower stall was one of my favorite scenes. It reminded me of a laser swamp, but the lights weren’t green like usual. They were red.
The delousing chamber was also very unique. The actress did a great job as her hair moved in the wind. The train ride is something else and a true showstopper. The actor that tormented us did a phenomenal job as he got inches from our face. He’s a freak of nature that won’t stop until you’re scared. I do have a suggestion when you visit the Bracken-Hart Institute for the Criminally Insane. Don’t drink the milk. That’s all I’m going to say. This haunt has so many scenes that it’s crazy. But you didn’t think we would give everything away, did you?
American Horrorplex is full of props. Many of them you won’t see everywhere. A victim has animated worms coming out of him. Mad experiments are being performed. A gorilla has its brain exposed while a chimpanzee screams in horror. The new CGI Monster was a nice touch. American Horrorplex is one of the best hospital themed haunts we’ve been to in years. The acting is phenomenal, some of the scenes are grotesque and the props can be found in your worst nightmares.
Total tour time was around 20 minutes. This includes the video at the beginning. Don’t you dare step outside of the blue circle. After you’ve survived the haunt, you can check out their gift shop where you can purchase the photo that was taken before entering the haunt. American Horrorplex has some interesting items for sale. There are T-Shirts, hats, license plates, flags, ashtrays and more. They even have American Horrorplex Underwear for sale. Don’t forget to press the button to activate the Bucky the Beaver Animatronic. It’s old school and I loved it.
You’ll exit the gift shop and enter the Beer Garden. Various vendors are setup. Food items include hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos and more. There are delicious roasted nuts for sale and even mead wine. There’s so much to do in the Beer Garden. It’s a great place to sit back and relax after getting the living daylights scared out of you. There’s an Escape Room, Butterfly Valley & Sanctuary goat petting zoo, vendors and so much more. I’m getting exhausted just thinking about all that American Horrorplex has to offer.
General admission is $26, VIP is $46 and Front-of-Line is $66. Both VIP and Front-of-Line tickets include $5 Boo Bucks that’s good towards side attractions, merchandise, and food! Click here for info on how to receive coupons. Parking is free. Trick or Treat: American Horrorplex Style takes place on Saturday, November 1st at 5pm and it’s free. On December 6th from 8pm-11pm, Christmas comes to the Bracken-Hart Institute… and it’s not bringing cheer. Step inside their Christmas Haunted House — a total blackout event where the patients are feeling festive and the halls echo with carols of chaos. Search the darkness for hidden holiday horrors. Find them all… and you’ll win something special from American Horrorplex.
American Horrorplex is a very unique experience from the moment you arrive to the minute you escape the madness. Head on down to Louisville and check in at the Bracken-Hart Institute for the Criminally Insane.
