Terror Town (Maumee, OH
“Monster Mayhem and Abominable Bloodshed”
By Noah Wullkotte: Jollypumpkin@aol.com

Terror Town at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in Maumee, Ohio is a state of the art attraction where you’ll experience many scenes and effects you’ve never seen before. It’s unlike anything in the area. Terror Town has two different haunts. House of the Dead is a haunted house taken to the extreme and Big Top Terror is a 3D Funhouse. It’s like the old style funhouse you remember from your youth, but it has a modern flair.

It was suggested that we tour Big Top Terror first. You could say that it’s the opening act. Light bulbs flash and illuminate letters that say “Big Top Terror”. Traditional carnival music plays while you wait in line. This haunt’s eye popping artwork was painted by the well known artist Stuart Smith. His signature art style has created some of the best 3D designs you’ve ever seen.

Big Top Terror features clowns hiding behind drop down panels, custom 3D art and some interesting decor. Scarefactory’s Mongo has been customized to reflect the funhouse theme. He’s a large monster that busts through the side of a wall with his arms spread out. Big Top Terror includes a new maze area that uses fabric that looks like it was cut from a circus tent. You’ll also walk through a vortex tunnel and a white claustrophobia tunnel. The final scene has a unique surprise. Press the button and see what happens. Total tour time is 6 minutes.

A haunted house has been flooded with ghosts, monsters and the living dead. It’s your duty to walk its haunted halls and do your best to survive. House of the Dead has the best animatronics I’ve seen and some incredible rooms that defy imagination.

You’ll travel through the dark hallways of a spooky mansion. Something isn’t right and you’re afraid of what you might have to endure. An unfortunate victim has a shovel lodged into their throat. It’s a gory mess. A ghost walks down wooden steps that mysteriously break. You can’t see the spirit, but you can feel its presence. A man can no longer handle the horrors inside House of the Dead and decides to take his life into his own hands.

House of the Dead is an amazing haunt with some shocking scenes and monsters. A hallway is full of hanging heads covered in maggots. The madness eventually spills to the outside where you’ll enter a graveyard full of creatures and supernatural beings. Trees magically come alive, a funeral procession is underway, a large glowing ghoul goes for its attack and a huge scorpion strikes. There are a lot of unique props inside the graveyard.

House of the Dead will take you straight to hell with its Hellevator ride that leads to the basement. More horrifying scenes are ahead. Zombies try to break down a door before they’re shot in the back of their heads and you’re hit with chunks of skull and brain matter. The house has been taken over by the walking dead, a super sized hand, a giant abominable snowman and even the sasquatch from the Jacks Links Beef Jerky commercials. He’s on a rampage and doesn’t like to be messed with. He’s seen ripping apart a camper at a campsite and you’re next.

House of the Dead has props and scenes that any major themepark would be happy with. You’ll see a huge semi that crashes through a wall, a monster snake that will eat you whole and the largest vortex tunnel Ohio has ever seen. It’s 120 feet long and Terror Town appropriately calls it “The Black Hole”. I appreciated some of the little unique touches like the boiling pig’s head in the haunted kitchen and the animated book cases in the library. We heard the Amityville Horror theme play in certain parts of the haunt.

House of the Dead is a 23 minute haunt that’s simply awesome. Brand new this year is The Asylum. It’s a money back haunt where you must eat something, drink something, and do something. The Asylum is $15 extra. If you complete the challenges then you receive a full refund and are put on the Survivor Wall. If you complete the challenge, you receive a full refund and are immortalized on The Asylum’s Surivior Wall. A spectator pass for The Asylum is $5 a person. A House of the Dead and Big Top Terror Combo is $25 a person. House of the dead by itself is $20 a ticket. Front of the line VIP tickets are available for $30 a person.
